The volcanic landscape of Almeria is surely what geologists must dream about in their sleep! Huge fragments of rock, known as the Arrecife de las Sirenas, pierce through the clear sea waters like mythical dragon’s teeth. This part of the Cabo de Gata coastal nature park is extremely photogenic. Hiking (3 stages. 2 nights. € per person) This is one of the Tours that will allow you to explore the entire Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, a natural space of an invaluable beauty and serenity. The contrasts of the landscape, the colors of the earth and the sea, the lights and the shadows, the silence; everything belongs to this spot, where it is easy to find what we thought lost.

Evolution of the Los Frailes caldera, Cabo de Gata volcanic field, southeastern Spain. [Charles G Cunningham; Geological Survey (U.S.);].

EVOLUTION OF THE LOS FRAILES CALDERA, CABO DE GATA VOLCANIC FIELD, SOUTHEASTERN SPAIN INTRODUCTION The Cabc de Gata volcanic field of southeastern Spain is the Evolution of the Los Frailes caldera extensive area of Tertiary volcanic rocks on the Iberian Peninsula. It is located southeast of a prominent left-lateral fault zone that separates theCited by: 2.

The Rodalquilar, Lomilla and the Los Frailes calderas are part of the Miocene Cabo de Gata volcanic field. The Rodalquilar caldera together with the superimposed Lomilla caldera host the.

The Rodalquilar caldera complex is located in the western part of the Cabo de Gata volcanic field in southeastern Spain and is the first documented example of epithermal gold-alunite. The Los Southeastern Spain book Formation lava-flow and dome complex is a Miocene succession that is part of the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone of SE Spain.

The complex comprises dominantly dacitic, subaqueous dome rocks and interstratified sedimentary horizons emplaced over a few tens of thousands of years.

Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in the southeastern corner of Spain is Andalusia's largest coastal protected area, a wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's oldest geological features.

Spain's southeast coast, where the park is situated, is the only region in mainland Europe with a true hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification: BWh). G lobally, the Cabo de Gata park is famous by geologists around the world because the way that volcanology has manifested itself in this land, finding very different forms of rock formations.

Wherever we look, within the park, there are traces of volcanic activity, erosion and ism has in Cabo de Gata his most important manifestation in Spain. The ash-tuffs of Los Escullos, Almerı́a (in the Cabo de Gata volcanic field, an extensive area of Tertiary volcanic rocks which stretches for 40 km along the southeastern coast of Spain) are rich in authigenic mordenite and bentonite.

Geologic map, volcanic stratigraphy and structure of the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone, Betic-Rif orogen, SE Spain Article (PDF Available) in Italian Journal of Geosciences (3) October. The Geology of the Cabo de Gata area.

The volcanic mountains in this corner of Almería run from Cabo de Gata to Carboneras. They are late-Alpine in age, being erupted some 16 million years ago at the southern end at Cabo de Gata, and 8 m years ago to the north. They arose from the thrust of Africa against the crystalline massif of Iberia, and the frequent earthquakes (up to Magnitude ) testify to.

EXPLORING - Cabo de Gata. From volcanic beginnings, the landscapes of the natural park have evolved into a region of hills and mountains, gorges, ravines, and arid plains, with a dramatic rocky coastline hiding remote and unspoilt beaches and coves.

The main roads through the park offer access to the villages of the park, both coastal and inland, however it must be noted that many rural areas. Inactive Volcanoes: If you are passionate about geology, the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar is a great place to study volcano landforms and its Geology.

The volcanic complex and the Cabo de Gata reef is the emerged part of a large area presently submerged beneath the magmatic Mediterranean Sea, in the Alboran area.

The Los Frailes caldera formed at Ma and is the oldest caldera. It formed in response to multiple eruptions of hornblende dacite magma. Following each eruption, the area collapsed and the caldera was invaded by the sea.

Dacite domes fill the lower part of the caldera. et al.) discuss the evolution of three calderas in the Cabo de Gata volcanic field of southeastern Spain. The papers document the geological setting and magmatic evolution that resulted in the formation of the unmineralized Los Frailes caldera (described in this paper) and the base and.

The Cabo de Gata volcanic zone is located in southeastern Spain and is a portion of the Neogene volcanic arc of the Betic-rif Orogen, an arcuate orocline formed by westward retreat of an east dipping slab Orogen. The zone includes a wide variety of volcanic facies, ranging from explosive to effusive and recording transient conditions during eruptions.

The Cabo de Gata volcanic field of southeastern Spain contains several recently-recognized calderas. Some of the calderas are mineralized with epithermal gold, alunite, and base metal deposits, and others are barren, and yet they formed under generally similar conditions.

Teaching field geology in Spain. Enseñando geología de campo en España The Cabo de Gata – Níjar Natural Park is home to. along the border of t he Los Frailes volcanic c omplex.

Cabo de Gata is a cape located in Níjar, Almería, in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, one of the biggest capes. It is de driest place in the peninsula ( mm average precipitation, being the lowest 52mm in ).

The lowest temperature was ºC. The Los Frailes caldera formed at Ma and is the oldest caldera. It formed in response to multiple eruptions of hornblende dacite magma.

Following each eruption, the area collapsed and the caldera was invaded by the sea. The Los Frailes Volcano formed around 8 million years ago above older rocks (more than ma) that extended towards the southern limit of the Sierra de Cabo de Gata.Cabo de Gata enjoys of a mixture of Atlantic and Mediterranean water mass that allows the development of the Almeria-Oran front biodiversity hotspot.

The park contains wide prairies of Posidonia oceanica ; sea urchins, starfish, sponges, molluscs, and many fish find refuge, food and ideal breeding grounds among their green leaves.

Strictly speaking the Cabo de Gata is not a desert, it is known as a semi arid zone due to the consistently high humidity levels, over 75%, caused by cold air from the inland Sierra Nevadas flowing down off the mountains to meet the warm, water saturated Mediterranean air.
